The Festival That Treats a City as Its Venue

Twenty-five years in, C2C still refuses the single-site model. Four days, eight rooms and a Sunday that behaves like a club night.

There is a version of C2C that would be easier to run. One hall, four stages, a shuttle bus, a wristband. Instead the festival spends its twenty-fifth year moving audiences between the industrial volume of OGR and Lingotto Fiere, the gilt of Teatro Carignano and Teatro Regio, the headquarters at Combo, and a final Sunday shared between Le Roi and Notorius on a single ticket. The inconvenience is the point. Crossing Turin between venues means the city becomes part of the programme rather than its backdrop, and it forces a kind of attention that a wristband and a food court actively discourage. It also means the rooms can be matched to the music: a theatre for a matinée, a vast hall for the nights that need scale, proper club spaces for the format the festival began with. The clearest statement in this year's programme is a duration. Theo Parrish plays seven hours at the new DAZED Stage. Nothing about festival economics encourages that decision: short slots produce fuller posters and more names to sell. Giving one artist an entire night assumes an audience that wants to be taken somewhere rather than shown a sequence of peaks, and that assumption is the whole difference between a festival and a line-up. Daylight is where C2C makes its other argument. C2C Talks has returned to Teatro Regio for a fourth consecutive year, and C2C Curators runs as free training for young music curators. Neither sells a ticket. Both are the reason the festival sits inside Turin's Contemporary Art Week rather than next to it, and the curator programme quietly addresses something the industry prefers not to discuss: the people who will programme Europe's rooms in a decade are being selected now, usually through unpaid work that most of them cannot afford. If you can take one night, take the one with the longest sets rather than the biggest name. If you can take two, pair a Lingotto night with the Sunday club format. The contrast between a hall built for trade fairs and a room built for dancing is the best short education in sound this calendar offers, and you will hear exactly why both exist.
