Stay with the warm-up. Let a track unfold. There is more to a night than its biggest moment.
Give it time
Some tracks announce themselves immediately. Others work slowly, changing the temperature of a room before anyone notices. When we only listen for a drop, we miss the quieter decisions that make it matter.
Between the highlights
A set has connective tissue: grooves that settle the room, transitions that change its direction, space that gives the next record somewhere to land. These passages are not empty time between highlights. They are part of the story.
Listen a little longer
Try staying with a piece of music beyond the point where you would usually move on. Notice what changes, what repeats and what your attention does. Sometimes the track stays the same and the listener moves.
