Inside ADE
A birthday measured in venues, not headliners
The 30th edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event ran across more than 300 venues over five days, with organisers counting close to 4,000 performing artists. That scale is the point: ADE is not one festival site with one main stage, but a whole city temporarily reorganised around electronic music, where a record shop in the afternoon and a warehouse at 4am belong to the same programme.
Jean-Michel Jarre as guest of honour
This edition named Jean-Michel Jarre its guest of honour, a choice that reaches back past club culture into the longer history of electronic sound. It is a reminder that the music ADE celebrates did not begin on a dancefloor, and that the festival's conference half is as interested in where the machines came from as in what is charting now.
A first attempt to measure night culture
Together with the research agency VibeLab, ADE presented a first Nighttime Culture Index, built on more than 12,000 event line-ups, over 3,000 venues and close to 30,000 cultural events. For a sector that has always argued its value without numbers, a shared dataset matters more than another panel: it gives promoters and city governments the same starting point.
What it is actually for
ADE is run by the Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation, a not-for-profit initiative of Buma, with BumaStemra as founding partner. That structure explains the shape of the week: a commercial festival would not spend half its programme on rights, mental health, safety and funding. The parties pay for the conversation, and the conversation is the reason the industry comes.
