Serato has released Serato DJ for iOS, expanding its DJ software beyond desktop computers. The mobile app offers two-deck mixing, effects, stem controls and tools for managing beatgrids, as well as ways to move a music library from Serato DJ Pro or Lite.
The hardware story is as important as the small screen. Serato says more than 120 compatible setups include controllers, mixers, turntables and Digital Vinyl System configurations. Some functions and devices require paid licensing, so the app should not be mistaken for an identical free replacement for the desktop product.
Existing users can transfer crates and metadata, including cues and beatgrid information, to a phone or tablet. That makes a portable device more useful for preparing a set or making adjustments away from the studio, even if the realities of club performance still favour dedicated equipment for many DJs.
The wider trend is clear: DJ software is becoming less tied to one laptop. The interesting test will be how reliably this new flexibility fits into working DJsu2019 everyday routines and how quickly the mobile interface matures.
